BIRD LIVES AGAIN!

NEW PROJECT ORCHESTRA

Sono passati più di cento anni da quando la città di Kansas City dette i natali a Charlie Parker: era il 29 agosto del 1920.

Parker fu il protagonista e il condottiero di una delle più importanti e influenti rivoluzioni che hanno squassato il mondo del jazz: il Bebop. Se Bird ne fu in assoluto l’icona, Dizzy Gillespie ne fu il grande comunicatore e promotore e Thelonious Monk il geniale architetto: un triumvirato irripetibile. Ad oggi sono considerati ancora i vati e i profeti del verbo boppistico con cui intere generazioni di musicisti si misurano.

Nel 2020 Parker avrebbe compiuto cento anni, un secolo di Bird: ma, tanto per non smentire la tradizione dell’artista maledetto, quasi tutte le celebrazioni del centenario sono state annullate a causa della pandemia che ha costretto l’umanità a sospendere quasi tutte le attività in corso.

La New Project Orchestra non poteva mancare a queste celebrazioni e aveva approntato un ricchissimo progetto speciale dedicato a Charlie Parker e al suo universo musicale, coordinato e diretto dall’arrangiatore e chitarrista Roberto Spadoni, con cui sono stati realizzati numerosi progetti orchestrali negli ultimi dieci anni: Spadoni oltre a curare quasi tutti gli arrangiamenti, ha proposto due brani originali nel solco della tradizione parkeriana (Fuga di Notizie e Times Have Changed). Il repertorio, il linguaggio del bebop rivisitato, il sound di Bird come centri gravitazionali intorno al quale sviluppare le trame orchestrali e i contributi dei solisti in un sentito e dovuto tributo al grande musicista. Naturalmente tutto si è fermato a marzo 2020 …

Ora finalmente, riprese le fila del discorso, l’orchestra si è riunita e l’intero progetto Bird Lives Again! è stato registrato presso gli studi di Collettivo Mood, nuovissimo studio di registrazione a Bolzano, che ha inaugurato proprio con questo progetto le sue attività.

Segment, Mouse the Mooche, Ornitology, Scrapple From the Apple, My Little Suede Shoes, Confirmation sono alcuni dei titoli inseriti nel nuovo cd, capolavori che scaldano il cuore agli appassionati di jazz. Nelle file della New Project Orchestra, oltre agli ormai storici solisti Paolo Trettel, Stefano Menato, Fiorenzo Zeni (autore anche di tre arrangiamenti), Gigi Grata, Stefano Colpi, sono stati ospitati tre preziosi collaboratori: Francesco Fratini alla tromba, Achille Succi al sax alto e clarinetto, Mauro Beggio alla batteria.

Il concerto viene arricchito dalle narrazioni di Roberto Spadoni, sempre pronto a coinvolgere e scaldare il pubblico coinvolgendolo condividendo informazioni e aneddoti sul contesto umano, storico, artistico, sociale in cui la meteora di Charlie Parker ha illuminato il mondo del jazz e della musica del ‘900. More than 100 years have passed since Kansas City gave birth to Charlie Parker: it was August 29th, 1920.

Parker was the leading character and forerunner of one of the most important and influential revolutions that rocked the Jazz world: Bebop. Whereas Bird was the star,  Dizzy Gillespie was the great communicator and promoter and Thelonious Monk the genius architect: an unrepeatable triumvirate. Up to nowadays they are still considered the bards and prophets of the bop language, with whom generations of musicians confront. 

In 2020 Parker would have been 100, a century of Bird: but, to follow in the damned artist's tradition, almost every centennial celebration was cancelled due to the pandemic that forced humanity to pause every possible running activity.

New Project Orchestra couldn't miss those celebrations and had set up a vast special program for Charlie Parker and his musical universe, coordinated and lead by arranger and guitarist Roberto Spadoni, with whom they had already crafted various orchestral works in the previous decade: Spadoni had shaped almost every arrangement, and had also come up with two original compositions in Parker's style (Fuga di notizie and Times have changed). The repertoire, the revisited bebop language, the sound of Bird as gravitational still points around which to develop the orchestral loom and the soloist's contributions, a heartfelt and must tribute to this great Musician. Obviously, everything stood still in March 2020...

Eventually now, back on track, the orchestra reunited and the whole Bird lives again! project has been recorded at the Collettivo Mood studio, brand new recording space in Bolzano that has opened its doors right on this work. 

Segment, Mouse the mooche, Ornitology, Scrapple from the apple, Au privave, My little suede shoes, Confirmation, here are a few of the included track, masterpieces that warm every jazz lovers's heart. In the New Project Orchestra lineup - beside long-time soloists Paolo Trettel, Stefano Menato, Fiorenzo Zeni (also author of three of the arrangements), Gigi Grata, Stefano Colpi - three special guests have been welcomed: Francesco Fratini trumpet, Achille Succi alto sax and clarinet, Mauro Beggio on the drums.

The concert is enriched by the narrating voice of Roberto Spadoni, always captivating and enthralling the audience sharing stories and trivia on the personal, historical, artistic and social context during which Charlie Parker's shooting star enlightened the world of Jazz and of Music of the Twentieth Century.
